EFP Preview Night at BrewDog Pittsburgh
BrewDog Pittsburgh is finally here!
After first falling in love with BrewDog’s signature Punk IPA in 2015 during my time in London, I can now enjoy BrewDog beer, food and fun just 12 minutes from my apartment.
For those who don’t know, BrewDog is a craft brewery founded in 2007 in the magical land of Scotland. If you are trying to take advantage of deeply discounted flights right now, GO TO SCOTLAND! The scenery is breathtaking even when it is insanely rainy and windy. Also, from experience, I advise you to not include Birkenstocks as one of your two footwear options when going on a weekend bus tour. But that’s beside the point.
BrewDog has made it to Pittsburgh and I am thrilled!
Back on February 27th, I went to a special preview night for EFPs (Equity for Punks or “shareholders”) on the night before the public grand opening. It was very hard to navigate the crowd but that didn’t diminish the fun! Also, I’m slightly ashamed to say I haven’t been back in the past two weeks but my boyfriend and I don’t venture outside much on weeknights.
Brewdog Pittsburgh is an Outpost, which means it is “fancier” than your average BrewDog bar. But don’t worry, by fancier I don’t mean there is a dress code requiring you to don your Sunday best. It is fancier because this location will actually brew small batches of beer onsite! The system was not up and running on the EFP Preview Night but I expect it to be brewing when I return.
The Pittsburgh location has a signature Yinzer Pale with a very specific 4.12% ABV (for the non-Pittsburghers, that’s the area code). The brewer at this location, Paul Young, explained the thought process that went into creating it: “My favorite thing about drinking beer is drinking more than 1 beer at a time. So we wanted to make something that would go good with food, would be easy drinking.” Unfortunately, along with the onsite brewing not working, the kitchen wasn’t open on the EFP Preview Night so I can’t tell you if it paired well with food. However, I have faith it does. As an IPA lover, I can promise that I will occasionally choose Yinzer Pale over Punk IPA or even the US-best-selling Elvis Juice IPA because while it has a lower ABV, it still has some nice subtle hops that make me happy.
Another really cool thing to note about the Yinzer Pale is that according to the US CEO of BrewDog, Jason Block, “This is the first time we have made a beer specific for a bar, for an opening. So this is very unique.” How cool that Pittsburgh is the first place to get a special BrewDog beer!?
Back in October, my boyfriend and I drove to Columbus and visited the US brewery. We took a tour of the facility, sipped a few beers (including the can of Punk IPA you get to drink as you tour) and enjoyed an amazing Indian-inspired pizza. We were honestly blown away by how flavorful it was. While the Pittsburgh location won’t serve pizza the menu does include wings (both chicken and cauliflower), tacos and lots of burgers which I can’t wait to try!
BrewDog is known for its unlimited Wings Wednesdays in the UK and, thankfully, it is set to launch in Pittsburgh in one week! According to Facebook, Pittsburgh’s first Wings Wednesday is going to be March 18th. Reservations must be booked in advance online and since I haven’t enjoyed wings in a while I am thinking it would be a wonderful idea to check it out ASAP!
