Shadyside Happy Hours
My friend told me I needed to write more posts about Pittsburgh happy hours, so this piece includes details on my favorite happy hour deals in the neighborhood of Shadyside!
Shady Grove
Monday-Friday from 5-7pm
Shady Grove has good food, a nice draft selection, a quality happy hour and amazing daily deals! Since this post is about happy hours, let me first explain what Shady Grove offers. From 5-7pm on weekdays they offer $3 and $4 draft beers along with $4 house wines. They only have a few wines to pick from but they offer over a dozen beers! When I most recently went all but one beer was $3. I was able to have 4 strong IPAs for a total of just $12! Amazing!
Now, as for daily deals, Shady Grove has quite a few nice ones to choose from. My personal favorite is Monday nights when all burgers are half off after 5pm. They have eight burgers to pick from and all come with fries. You can upgrade to waffle fries, onion rings or sweet potato tots for just an additional $1. I recommend the Turkey Burger as it is topped with smoked gouda, lettuce, tomato, a generous portion of avocado and mango salsa. I added onions as well. Honestly, the original price of $11 is pretty good for such a filling meal but you absolutely can not pass up half price burgers!
Thursdays seem to be a great deal as well. I haven’t been but a friend has and she seemed to enjoy it (looking at you, Caity)! On top of the regular happy hour, Shady Grove has a Thursday special of ½ price speciality cocktails, $4 glasses of champagne and $2 Miller High Life.
The Yard
Wednesday-Friday from 3-7pm and Sunday from 10pm-midnight
The Yard has a few locations in Pittsburgh and it is most known for fancy grilled cheese sandwiches. However, for blog purposes each location has a different happy hour. The Shadyside location is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, hence why it does not offer happy hour. If you can make it to the Shadyside location for drinks after work on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, you are in luck! Happy hour is FOUR hours and includes ½ price drafts, ½ price apps, $5 cocktail of the day and $3 glasses of house wine.
The Yard has an extensive rotation draft list with over 20 beers always on offer. They feature many local brews along with a selection of imports. I really enjoy the way they can always offer me an array of IPAs! As for appetizers, I can personally attest that their pub pretzels are delicious! They are slightly crisp on the outside and chewy at the center. They also have nice wings and for $5, you can’t beat a pound of them at happy hour!
Steel Cactus
Monday-Friday from 5-7pm
I prefer to drink at Steel Cactus rather than eat, so this is a great place to go if you are hopping bars during happy hour. They offer $3 house wines, $5 speciality drinks, $7 Yinzeritas and ½ price apps. Now, if you aren’t from Pittsburgh you are probably wondering what a Yinzerita is, right? It is a large frozen margarita (you can choose from a handful of flavors) with a bottle of beer strategically tipped upside down so that you can incrementally add beer into the drink. I also do a strawberry margarita with a Stella, but most people do a cheaper beer. To each their own.
There are only seven speciality drinks to pick from but don’t let that deter you! My favorites are the Latte de Vanilla (“An alcohol infused latte made with Avion Espresso, Absolut Vanilla, and a thick heavy cream decked with a coffee rim”) and Cactus Caribbean Hurricane (“This beach classic is a mixture of spiced rum, coconut rum, orange juice and pineapple juice. Topped off with a Myers dark rum floater and a splash of grenadine to create a perfect storm”).
As for ½ price appetizers, Steel Cactus does make good guacamole so go ahead and munch on guac and chips with your drinks!
