Melbourne. Early Spring. Intrepid adventurer Natalie Zazula sets out on a feat never attempted by a tourist: the Melbs CBD Doughnut Walk. Melbourne has been kind with the weather today, a slight breeze and warm sun encourage Natalie as she sets off down William Street in her ultra hip, forest green Doc Martens. She is joined by Maya Dodd, a Disney alumni from across the pond. Together they jaywalk across the tram tracks. They are feeling indestructible.
As my Australia trip was approaching, I messaged my friends here to get recommendations on whether or not to go to the Great Barrier Reef. I also posted in my favorite Facebook group: Girls Love Travel. The consensus was yes, definitely go. I knew deep down that would be the answer but I needed a final nudge to book flights and accommodation because it is a pricey journey when booked last minute.
I’m currently writing this post on a beautiful back patio overlooking the Port of Airlie to my left with hillsides covered in tropical vegetation all around. There are gently chirping birds and then terribly annoying cockatoos. I hear, see and feel the gentle ocean breeze. I wish I had a guidebook to tell me about all the trees and bushes I see but I am content simply knowing they are beautiful.
There is also a bottle of Australian beer open next to me so that helps it all, too.
I’ve now been in Australia for a week and all of those days have been spent in Melbourne. I’ve been to many markets, coffee shops, beaches, restaurants, bars and stores. I really like most of the city but there are some things I cannot vibe with or that have caused me strange reactions. Since nearly everyone reading this will be familiar with Facebook, I’ve broken down some of the things I’ve encountered in Melbourne into six categories: Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry.
I’ve now spent 72 hours in Melbourne (it is pronounced Mel-bin and not Mel-born) and I love it. It is unlike any city I’ve ever experienced. Many aspects of it remind me of Europe but it is so unique as well that I cannot even offer another city as comparison!
