Melbourne Food: Round Two

Melbourne Food: Round Two

Hello! Time for round two of what I've eaten in Melbourne! There should be one more post coming in the next few days to finish it out. This post features Thai food, pizza, an AMAZING Aussie breakfast and plenty of donuts!

Your Thai: When a pad thai craving hits, I need to fulfill it within 24 hours. Torii had been to Your Thai with Alaina’s roommate so she knew where it was located and that it had pad thai. The portion was large and the food was great. It is right in the CBD (city center) on Swanston Street and was very central to where we were spending the day. Not the best pad thai I’ve had (that still goes to a place in Plymouth) but it filled me up and temporarily gave me my pad thai fix.

Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar: We decided for a night in with pizza and it was delicious. Wow. It was a two block walk from Alaina’s and since it was a rainy night, no one else was in the restaurant. We each ordered our own pizza for takeaway. I enjoyed the Pesto Chicken Club with “House Cooked Chicken Breast Fillets, Thinly Sliced Prosciutto, Spanish Onions & Fresh Tomatoes on a Tomato & Garlic base, Garnished with Fresh Avocado, Wild Rocket and Pesto Aioli (All pizzas topped with 100% Australian Mozzarella cheese).” On the walk back to Alaina’s, we got caught in a downpour and our pizza boxes were destroyed but the pizza itself survived and was devoured. I was able to have leftovers for two days but the other two...they didn’t.

Lt Billy: I also already wrote about my breakfast at Lt (Little) Billy but it was so amazing it needs another blurb. Fluffy egg whites, bacon, sausage, beans in a tomato sauce, crusty toast and hash browns. The hash browns here are in a patty form and they are great. The bacon here in Australia is so flavorful and filling. It reminds me of ham in some ways but with better flavor. I had a proper Australian iced coffee here, which was coffee over ice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. I’d call it more of a milkshake but it was amazing nonetheless.

Lord of the Fries: Apparently this is staple drunk food. There are a few locations throughout Melbourne. We stopped for a bite after bar hopping and I was a little disappointed with my selection. I went for crispy chunky fries with the Parisian sauce, which was fancy garlic aioli mayo. I tried one of Alaina’s sweet potato fries and it was amazing! I recommend the sweet potato over my chunky ones!

Affogato Espresso Bar: Maya and I wanted to find a cute cafe in a laneway and we succeeded. My bacon toastie (panini) had amazing Aussie bacon, caramelized onions, cheese and I added smashed avocado. I had to eat slowly and savor each bite because the food was so fresh. The flavors meshed so well and I got a bit of tangy onion with each nibble. This was one of my favorite things I’ve eaten here. I drank a long black, which is two shots of espresso with hot water. It is similar to an Americano but much stronger and much smaller.

Dan O’Connell Hotel: Cute pub! We went here for a poetry reading but I ended up having two pints of a delicious double IPA. It was 8.8% ABV and is brewed by Pirate Life brewing. Maya also ordered chips that we all shared and they were very yummy.

Lemongrass: Per usual, I was in the mood for Thai food. Maya was unable to stay for dinner but Alaina and I ate at Lemongrass in Carlton. It was a finalist for the 2017 Awards for Excellence for Thai Restaurant and it was so well deserved. I had pad see ew, which are wide egg noodles in a dark sweet soy sauce with garlic, broccoli, eggs and chicken. It is one of my favorite Thai dishes and this may have been the best iteration of it I’ve ever had.

The Flour Market at Collingwood Town Hall: Now, this was a bake sale that happens once each season. Bakeries from all over the city set up a table and sell their goods. It cost $2 to enter (it gets donated to charity) and you get a small-ish box to go to the stalls and buy food from. It was overwhelming in the best way. I had the best donut ever there. It was tiramisu from a place called Short Stop. It was a normal donut with a chocolate frosting and a creamy, drippy tiramisu center. So delicious. I also have my first lamington, which is a traditional Australian sponge cake rolled in chocolate and coconut. I purchased it from Nine Bakery and Patisserie. The final donut I had was a Golden Gaytime donut from Bistro Morgan. It was: "signature brioche doughnut + swiss chocolate + honeycomb crunch + salted caramel syringe."

Pink Flake: Alaina made me walk for an hour from Brighton Beach down to St. Kilda but I was rewarded with the best chips I’ve had in Australia. I thought Alaina was taking them up to get my mind off of my aching feet but no, the chips were amazing. Hand cut in the show and perfectly crispy on the outside. The crispy where it almost seems oily but it actually isn’t. I also had a bangin’ chipotle mayo dip with mine.
